Sounding Cocks

A sounding cock is fitted at the top of a sounding pipe so a tank can be measured with a tape or rod without leaving the pipe open. The self closing action is the whole point: the cock is held open only while the sounding is taken and springs shut afterwards, so the tank is never left venting to the deck or the space around it.

Bodies are bronze and gunmetal for seawater and fuel oil service, in sizes around DN32 to DN65. Turning lever arrangements differ, with 90 degree stop patterns indexing the plug to a fixed open position and 360 degree patterns allowing the lever to be turned continuously where deck clearance is tight.

When specifying, confirm the bore, the pressure rating, the tank contents and the deck arrangement, since the lever swing and the height above the deck plate decide whether a given pattern can actually be operated in place.
