Self Closing Valves

A self closing valve is held shut by a spring and opens only while the operator holds the lever or handle. Release it and the spring returns the closure member to its seat. The point is not convenience but the opposite: it makes it impossible to walk away from an open valve, which matters on sounding pipes, tank drains and sampling points where an open line is a flooding or spill risk rather than an inconvenience.

The pattern is common in shipboard and tank farm service, in straight and angle forms so the valve can sit in a run of pipe or turn a corner at a tank connection. Bodies are typically ductile iron or cast steel for general duty, with bronze used where the medium is seawater. Sizes in this range cover small bore up to around DN100 at PN16, which suits sounding, drain and sample lines rather than main isolation.

When specifying, confirm the bore, the pressure rating, the medium and whether a straight or angle body suits the pipe run. The spring force and the handle arrangement matter in practice, since a valve that is awkward to hold open invites someone to tie it open, which defeats the design.
