About fire hydrants

A fire hydrant provides firefighting crews with a rapid, controlled connection to the water distribution network. Fed from a buried main, the hydrant delivers water at flow and pressure through standard outlet couplings for hoses and pumps. Reliable operation after long periods of standing idle is the defining requirement, so hydrants are built to drain down after use and to resist corrosion and frost.

Two forms are in general use. The pillar (above-ground) hydrant stands proud of the ground with the outlets accessible at working height, and is common where freezing is not a persistent risk or where a frost-proof barrel design is used. The underground (below-ground) hydrant sits in a chamber beneath a surface cover, protected from traffic and weather, and is accessed with a standpipe. Dry-barrel designs drain the barrel after closing so no water is left to freeze.

Hydrants serve municipal water networks, industrial sites, ports and airports and any premises with a firefighting water requirement. Correct spacing and flow capacity are set by local fire authority and network rules, and the outlet couplings follow regional firefighting standards so that local brigade equipment connects without adapters.

Design follows standards such as EN 14384 for pillar fire hydrants and EN 1074-6 for hydrant performance in water supply, with flanged inlet connections to EN 1092. Bodies are typically ductile iron with fusion-bonded epoxy coating, with bronze or stainless internals and resilient seating. When specifying, provide the type (pillar or underground), the inlet size and connection, the required outlets and coupling standard and the operating pressure, and we can propose a suitable hydrant.
